Oregon Knife Show Display Award Knives
-
The display award knives are a special award knife
given to the best
displays at the Oregon Knife Show. In the past few years the blades that
were used in the grinding competition are given to the grinders or to anyone
willing to finish the blades. These are the knives that are truly unique,
one of a kind prizes. This emphasizes the tie in the association between
knife makers and collectors, we are all involved in the circle of
"cut." Twelve knives will be awarded to some 25 displays that grace
our Show every year. These displays are museum quality collections that
mesmerize and educate visitors to our event.

Display awards for the 2010 Show were blades
that were used in the grinding competition at the 2009 Show.
The knife design for this year’s blade grinding event was an original pattern
from Bill Harsey. Bill is an award winning designer in both the handmade and commercial field. Our sincere thanks go to Bill for this generous gift.
The steel for this year’s event is 1095 donated by Pacific Machinery and Tool Steel Company of Portland Oregon.
Larry
Criteser modified the pattern to make it compatible for the grinding competition.
Larry profiled 12 blanks for the competition.

Jose Diaz from
Ellensburg Washington has enhanced this blade to make a knife using
Desert Ironwood for the handle. The blade was edge quenched with a salt bath triple temper.

This knife was the one that Tedd
Harris From Hillsboro Oregon worked on for the grinding competition
at our April 2009 Show. The blade is 1095 steel and the handle is Granadillo
wood while the fittings are nickel silver and brass. The blade was edge quenched
and etched. This accounts for the remarkable stripe showing the transition zones
from hard edge to soft back. Visit with Tedd at Table S04 at the 2010 April
Show.. http://www.angelfire.com/mac2/knives/

-
Gene Martin from Williams Oregon enhanced
this knife a reconstituted turquoise spacer followed by a Cholla wood handle.
The bolsters are nickel silver and the blade was clay treated which accounts for
the patterns seen on this beautifully done knife. Visit with Gene at Table
Q10 at the 2010 April Show. www.customknife.com

Joel Purkerson is from Eugene Oregon. This
is the first time that Joel has gotten involved with our display awards and he
has done a fantastic jawb on this knife. The blade has been treated with a
mustard patina and the handles are Bocote wood. Visit with Joel at Table P08
at the 2010 April Show.

Jeff Crowner, Cottage Grove, Oregon,
differentially heat treated the blade at his shop. He then finished the knife
with nickle silver bolsters and flamewood slabs. Jerry Whitmore has added his
engraving touch to this knife. Visit with Jeff at Table N12 at the 2010 April
Show.
-
Lynn Moore, Fall Creek, Oregon, added a
nice touch to this knife with jade handles. Jerry Whitmore has engraved a dragon
on the silicone bronze bolsters making this a stylish and attractively blended
art knife. The pommel is silicone bronze also. Visit with Lynn at Table O13
at the 2010 April Show.

Mike Turner, Williams Oregon has done
something special with the blade blank he enhanced. The blade is clay coated
which gives it a softer back on the blade and a cloud like appearance. The
handle is from a maple burl and the guard and handle frame is made from
"W" pattern damascus. The guard as seen in this picture merely gives a
hint of the damascus. www.turnerknives.com
